New Beginnings Celebrated at Women Build Dedication

On Thursday, we celebrated the completion of two more Women Build homes with a dedication event in Minneapolis. Muna and her family are purchasing the home built on Morgan Avenue North over the spring and summer. Solomon and Tigist will be the owners of the home built on Winona Street in West St. Paul this summer and fall. The kids in both of these families will benefit from having a grandmother in the homes as well.

At the dedication, both families received a bible and the framed Golden Rule that every Habitat homeowner gets. The Golden Rule is written out as it appears in belief communities around the world. Of course it wouldn't be a Habitat home dedication without lots of food and a sheet cake for the young and the young at heart. Both homes were built by Women Build participants - from the raising of the first wall, to the final landscaping.

Muna is extremely thankful for her new home. When she moves in it will be a reunion of sorts. She is currently living on the near north side of Minneapolis with her two children, while her mother Sewde stays in South St. Paul. Now the whole family will be able to be together under one roof.

"It will be so great to have all of us under one roof again," said Muna. "On top of everything else the kids will be able to stay in their same schools."

Muna understands the responsibilities behind homeownership. She has enjoyed learning the proper ways to fix and maintain her home through classes and sweat equity. The family’s new Habitat home will provide privacy, space and safety. With these basic comforts met, Muna will finally be able to focus on cultivating and financing her next top priority: education.

Her goals include getting her GED and then pursuing more schooling, perhaps to be a nurse. Plans for the house include finishing the basement, getting a washer and dryer and putting up a fence in the yard so the kids can safely play outside.

Amun is five years old and in preschool while Imad is four years old and is in Headstart. They are both looking forward to having their own room where they can keep their toys. Amun has two paper hearts that she made at school that she is saving to hang on her new bedroom walls.

Solomon and Tigist, who are purchasing the home in West St. Paul, are raising four children. Tigist's mother will also be living with the family. They're excited to have a place to call their own, a place to watch a movie together as a family and a place to put down permanent roots. The family enjoys spending time together at church and visiting with their friends. They're all very excited to be starting this new chapter in their lives!
